Essential oils has been used for thousands of years for their healing and theraputic properties. But why do they work? Here are som reasons:
Natural chemical compounds
Essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants that contain natural chemical compounds. These compounds have unique properties that can affect the body and mind in different ways. For example, Lavender oil is known for its calming properties thanks to compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate.
Aromatherapy and fragrance molecules
When you inhale the scent of an essential oil, the scent molecules travel through the nose to the brain, specifically to the limbic system which is linked to emotions and memories. This is why certain scents can evoke feelings of calm, happiness or energy.
External use and absorption
When you apply essential oils to the skin, they can be absorbed and affect the body on a cellular level. Essential oils such as Tea tree and Eucalyptus have antimicrobial properties that can help fight infection and speed healing.
Holistic health
Essential oils support holistic health by creating balance and well-being throughout the body. They can be used to manage stress, improve sleep quality, relieve pain and strengthen the immune system, and contributing to a general sense of well-being.
To more easily appreciate the value of essential oils, it helps to understand how they support the plant to survive and feel good in its environment. We can take an example, how they protect the plant against attack.
Melaleuca alternifolia, also known as the Tea Tree, is a small tree that grows along rivers and in swampy areas in Australia, where the weather is constantly hot and humid.
Imagine the amount of different microbes that thrive in such a warm and humid area, and the natural breeding ground it creates for mold, fungi and bacteria. A plant that lives in such terrain must have a strong internal immune system to both survive and thrive.
The magic lies in the primary constituents of the aromatic compounds found in Tea tree, namely A- & Y Terpenes, Terpin-4-ol and P-cymene, which are naturally antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and analgesic in nature.
Since humans, like plants, are carbon-based, the properties of the Essential Oils are equivalent and beneficial to humans as well. As in the example, where aromatic compounds in the Tea tree protect it from harmful microbes present in its immediate environment. In exactly the same way, we can use essential oils to strengthen protection against microbes in our own environment.
Another unique property that essential oils have is the molecular size of the active ingredients. They are incredibly small, and can quickly pass through the skin layers, and be absorbed directly by the bloodstream, and in some cases even pass the blood-brain barrier, and easily enter through the cell membrane, which is absolutely amazing and creates amazing opportunities for us.
So Essential oils can be absorbed by the body, and we can use that for our healing and our use of the oils.
Recognition of essential oils as powerful promoters of physical, mental and emotional health is growing rapidly globally. And I have seen how curiosity and interest have increased among people just in the years I have used Essential Oils myself.
I have replaced so many common synthetic products with Essential Oils, in all sorts of areas of my life, and I never cease to be amazed at all the amazing properties they have.
And with the thought of all the chemicals, endocrine disruptors and cancer-causing substances that we are exposed to on a daily basis in our lives, I am glad that I manage to replace almost everything at home, with natural products that mostly also contain essential oils.
